Why organisations need to say ‘sayonara’ to legacy tech

Japan’s Minister for Digital Affairs, Taro Kono, recently vowed to consign outdated tech hardware - in particular floppy disks and fax machines - to the history books in an effort to bring Japan into the digital age.

According to his estimates, Kono states that around 1,900 government procedures still rely on businesses and communities functioning with the use of floppy disks and CDs.

To some, this may seem surprising given that Japan is often held aloft as a tech trailblazer. However, as our chief product and technology officer Jeff Watkins, in his recent comment for tech magazine Verdict, explains, it’s not just Japan that should be singled out for using legacy tech - organisations a lot closer to home are also still hoarding retro tech.
